The competition is open to students of carpentry, joinery and shop fitting who are registered at a college, technical school or training centre. There are two categories – students who are under 20 and students who are over 20.

How do I enter?

Please fill in and send us the entry form.

When is the closing date?

You must send your entry form to us by 31 March 2008. Later entries may be accepted, but we cannot guarantee this.

You must submit your test piece by the end of May 2008. We will tell you where to send your test piece.

When will judging take place?

Preliminary judging will take place in each regional area of the Institute of Carpenters during June 2008, with national judging taking place on the first Saturday in July 2008.

What are the test pieces?

Drawings of the test pieces can be downloaded here. Larger versions (A2) of the drawings will be sent to you when we receive your entry form.

You must follow the instructions on how to make the test piece, including the detailed cutting and material list. You must not apply any surface treatment to your test piece.

How do I enter for the preliminary judging?

You must send your test piece to the address given to you by the competition manager by the end of May 2008. Your work must be clearly labelled and securely packed. We must be able to repack it easily for return to you or posting on to the national judging team.

You must pay the cost of posting your test piece to us.

The judges can choose not to make awards at a regional level and not to enter test pieces for national judging if they decide the craftsmanship is not of a high enough standard.

What happens at the national judging?

All winners and runners-up at a regional level will be entered for the national competition. Test pieces must be sent for national judging by the end of June. Postage costs will be paid by the competition sponsors.

The decision of the national judges will be final. They can choose not to make any awards if they decide the craftsmanship is not of a high enough standard.

Will I get my test piece back?

Test pieces entered for both regional and national judging will be returned to you.

Test pieces from overseas cannot be returned.

We will do our best to look after your test piece and protect it from damage. However, we cannot accept liability for any loss or damage caused while your test piece is in the post or held by us.

Winning test pieces may be displayed for one year before they are returned.

If your test piece is not a prize winner and you have not received it back by 1st September, please let the Competition Manager know.
